Ways To Enhance Your Commute: Using a Commuter Bike

By Kyle Piraino

When was the last time you rode a bike? If you haven't ridden one lately, it probably has been a very long time, possibly since your childhood. I recently invested into a bike to commute to work with and it was a fantastic decision. I never realized how much I would enjoy riding a bike to work. Especially if you live in a city setting where driving is a hassle, the usefulness of a commuter bike increases even more.

Some people do work on their commute to work, some people sleep, I personally exercise. Getting exercise on the way to work is a great addition to what you do in the morning. A lot of people complain they do not have time to exercise, and this ends that problem. Being able to get on your commuter bike and get a morning workout and a workout on the way home is extremely valuable.

A new bike costs a pretty penny I will admit. But that money is almost immediately made up for with not only the money you save on your commute, but the money you would save on a gym membership as well. You only have to give money to the bike once, and the lack of monthly MTA cards and the gym membership will easily save you enough money for it to be worth it.

The one negative that I thought I would run into would be getting to work sweaty and gross after riding a bike to work, but that wasn't the case. Living in the city means that there are no hills, so riding your commuter bike is care free and effortless. Pedaling on a flat surface on a easy gear gets you to work while avoiding the traffic and without the sweat.

I see very few if any negatives to riding a bike to work. You save a ton of money on cabs and subways, not to mention not having to deal with another packed subway car again. You also better yourself by exercising and you feel great all day. Seems like a no brainer to invest in a new commuter bicycle.
