A Brief History of the Television

By Ashton Moss

The earliest versions of what we would recognise today as a domestic TV, with cathode ray tubes, were first released back in the 1930’s by Telefunken, a German company. The cathode ray tube (CRT) technology found in these early TV's consisted of a vacuum tube, an electron gun and a fluorescent screen, which combined to create the moving images seen on screen.

World War II had a huge impact on both the their demand and production, August 1945 saw a huge rise in the popularity of TV’s both in America and Europe, the UK in particular.. The combination of rapidly growing TV networks, advances in technology and plummeting costs saw the total number of TV's in in British households soar from 15,000 in 1947 to 1.4 million in 1952, up to an incredible 15.1 million in 1968.

CRT TV’s are pretty much obselete these days, with customers preferring the far better picture quality offered by LCD or Plasma technologies, not to mention the significantly reduced footprint required for these modern units. As it happens, sales of LCD televisions overtook those of CRT for the first time around 5 years ago, and continue to grow year on year.

A large advantage of LCD/Plasma over traditional TV's is the aforementioned dramatic reduction in size of the units. A typical 42” LCD TV weighs around 22kg’s, compared to an enormous 130kg+ of a CRT set with a similar sized screen. It's this vast reduction in weight that enables LCD and Plasma screens to be mounted with TV wall brackets which not only saves on space, but also allows for a more comfortable viewing angle.

Which Technology Should You Buy?

Picture

As a general rule, it’s the manufacturer of the TV that can make the biggest difference in picture quality between different LCD and Plasma TV’s, as opposed to the actual technology behind them. A higher quality LCD will outperform a low quality Plasma, and vice-versa. It pays to invest in a good quality TV from a reputable brand such as Sony, Samsung, Panasonic or Sharp.

Plasma screens tend to perform better in dark rooms, LCD’s preferring normal light conditions.

Sound

The vast reduction in physical size means there tends to be less room to house a decent in-built speaker on modern TV’s. So, using the simplest possible measurement, as LCD screens tend to be the slimmest of the two options, this generally means that corners are cut in terms of sound quality more so than with Plasma screens, which are that little bit bulkier anyway.

Power Usage

Modern LCD screens are by far the most energy efficient of the two technologies, with power consumption usually half that of a same sized Plasma screen. LED screens however are even less power-hungry still, but require a considerably larger initial outlay.

Volleyball Sportsmanship

By Karly Shannon

As a volleyball instructor, you have to display control by providing your players a list of rules and expectations that they must know and comply with. Laying down the law in the initial week is going to be essential if you wish to operate a well-oiled machine. I have created a summary of what i feel are the essentials.

UNACCEPTABLE Behavior

Partaking in just about anything rather than watching and cheering when players are on the bench. The players should never be chatting about Jersey Shore or their boyfriends. They must be watching the match. Distracting a player which is making an attempt to play a ball. This is along the line of good sportsmanship. Never allow your players fall into this because you really do not desire to be unliked by other teams. You can swiftly create a track record yourself.

Shouting or swearing in frustration. Yet again, sportsmanship. I had a player yell the "F" word while in a tight match with plenty of people viewing. The most unfortunate part was that it was so noiseless since it was such an enjoyable play. A very embarrassing instant no doubt.

Questioning or demeaning an official's call. Almost nothing bugs me more than watching players request a call following every play. Do not permit your players to do that. Let them understand that that is your job. Hurling or kicking the ball in frustration. If you have ever coached boys, you know what I am talking about. They love to kick the ball as far as they can. Furthermore, isn't this like the first rule of volleyball you ever learned? That and rolling the ball under the net (I love tossing it over to the person serving).

Talking to the officials. You definitely need to make sure everyone understands only the captain can talk to the officials. It is actually not entertaining to get a yellow card at a critical part of a match. Negative cheers. Remember this one?: We want a pitcher not a belly itcher. None of that please.

Blaming teammates. Yet another thing I feel that I see way too much. Every team has that one player that loves to look at the person who screwed up and point out some thing. That is the coach's job. Don't allow that to get out of control.

Pouting after a missed play. In the event that this occurs, just take the player out. This is not really going to benefit the team.

Here is a list of things to promote:Assist teammates off the floor, Compliment teammates and opponents on great play, Roll the ball under the net, Run to get a wayword ball and return to the server or referee, Cheering at the conclusion of every point (win or lose the point), Cheering from the sidelines ("Jenny's on fire, Ooh, Ah", "Keep it up Sara, keep it up", "Here we go Red, here we go"), Reassuring player which makes an error ("Don't worry, you'll get it next time").

Writing Is Painting

By John Mason

Whenever we hear the word art the number one thing that comes into our mind are painting, sculptures, music and dancing. But if we limit ourselves in these so called formal liberal arts then we'd be missing a lot of gorgeous and significant varieties of art.

An instance of art that's left unobserved for years is writing. There are 2 kinds of writing which are technical writing and independent writing. Technical writing is generally expressed through thesis, dissertation and argumentative research papers. In the strictest sense this cannot be an art because it follows a system and it is more technical than a type of expression. Independent writing on the other hand is what can be thought to be an art as it has qualities that can express the thoughts and emotions of a writer. As a writer expresses their emotion, a painter expresses their emotion through paint.

In independent writing it follows no system, the strategy, style and format is left to the writer. The writer can also freely select the words that he or she will be using to magnificently articulate his or her thoughts in the most creative way which is worth examining.

At the advent of the 21st century we saw the very sudden increase in numbers of free lance writers. The explanation for this is that folk are now more aware on the powers of writing, we have often heared the old chestnut which is that the pen is mightier than the sword as there's some truth to this stock saying. As we have seen in the history of man that a single writing can cause both war and peace.

The origination of independent writing is somewhat obscure due to the scarcity of documentary proof that pin down to its origin. But what is certain is that it is a product of literary evolution. Writing is a kind of art that any person can love, freelance writing is for all, and you do not have to be a rhetorician or a literary major in order to know the way to write. Same goes for painting, anyone can paint, as one can learn how to oil paint on his own, you just need to start! All you need to do is to pick up your paper and pen and express what you're feeling.

How To Boost Your Baseball Abilities

By Bobby Hilton

I have a tip for you. Perhaps a small number of you out there have difficulty dropping your hands, perhaps even higher cutting at the ball. I got a baseball tee drill that will help you out. It happens off a tee.

What I want to do is start with a high tee. When I have the ball up high, an uppercut's not going to work. You can do this drill regularly. But what it's going to make you do is keep on top of the ball, here. You have a problem dropping your hands and making an attempt to swing this way, you can see I'm going to have trouble getting on top of this ball.

What you need to do, put the tee up high and work on hitting line drives of ground balls. From this point, I would like to come down on the ball. It may drill your back leg working. It will work on your hands staying above the ball. This is going to need to occur over and over for you to get used to not doing this. But we wish to stay up top and come down. I believe that may help you.

Do this drill quite a lot. Remember, hitting's muscle memory. The more frequently you can do it, the more you'll become used to it. We can dump that dropping of the hands or that uppercut.

Get in a comfortable position and work down over the top of the ball. So use this high tee drill to help improve an uppercut or dropping the hands. It'll help you out enormously. It helped me, so I am sure with commitment it will help you. If you use this drill, your swing will improve and will lead to a great game.

Nobody wants to get burned out when running

By Matthew Stafford

Train to Race!

Train to race, don't race to train! That rule is the gauge that can successfully monitor intensity. If your mile times are getting slower with the same or increased sensed effort, you're either starting too quickly, not giving yourself enough recovery, or both. Run at a pace you are able to hold constantly throughout the session. If you are able to run slightly faster on the final mile or miles, you've likely worked in the proper coaching area.

Know When to Say When!

Occasionally it's good to stop before it is too late. End the workout feeling like you might run another mile at the training pace. This requires you to truthfully guage yourself. You can push further than what is constructive if you have a robust psychological push or tendency. This may not play in your favor if you don't make a fair evaluation of your physical condition.

A few tricks you can do avoid runner's burnout is determining goals for yourself. When you have something to visualise and aim towards then you will find yourself doing miles better. Make sure you change exercises up, if you are a runner then go biking or swimming. Try to enroll for a race exclusively for fun so you aren't just participating in hard races all the time. Take a break once in a while. It is OK to take a couple of days off and maybe even a week. You'll come back refreshed and full of energy.

Some reliable advice I have is to have workout mates! Intense, solitary workouts are great for your marathon training but a little time getting your sweat on with a mate is great for your soul. Ensure you do not join too many races; you would not want to burn yourself out!

I've been running since I can remember. My mother always said that I literally went from crawling to running and I've done my best to never stop. Throughout my youth I got involved with soccer and moved on to track & cross country. While my college years were a bit of a rough patch athletically, I tried to stay in decent shape by running 3-4 miles several times per week - but I wasn't even close to being able to race competitively.

After I graduated college, I got my first full time job and within 8 months I was gaining weight on a daily basis, didn't feel good about myself, and was lacking the energy that I was so used to. When I was at the gym one day, I saw a group of people stretching that had just got back from a run. I got to talking to them, and they informed me they were all training for the upcoming local marathon. Even though it was only 6 weeks away, I decided right then and there that I was going to come up with a running schedule that would allow me to cross that finish line. Long story short, I ended up battling several injuries, got about 9 miles into the race and was forced to quit - I didn't have enough time. At this point I was even more down on myself, but I did make a promise that I would complete a marathon.

Before I knew it, I was in my lower 30's, married with one child and another on the way. On top of that I was working full time. While this wasn't the perfect time to begin training, there was a marathon coming up in 6 months that I was excited to begin training for. I figured that with that amount of time, I would be fine. After two months I was exhausted. I was running about 65% of what my highest mileage week would be, and while it wasn't too demanding physically, mentally I was worn out - but I decided to push through. 2 and a half months later and I was still 6 weeks out, I was a complete wreck. Bags under my eyes, limping everywhere I went, and just wasn't happy with my lifestyle. My goal was to run a marathon, not qualify for the Olympic trials.

3 years later and I still hadn't completed a marathon. A race was coming up in a few months and I decided to give it another shot. I got a 10 week marathon program from a friend and I was off and running. I had talked to many people about a 10 week marathon schedule and they said with my background it would be the perfect amount of time. The first few weeks were a bit difficult to get adjusted to, but I knew I only had a few weeks before my milege would start decreasing (taper phase). By the time I was starting to get worn out, it was race day! While I didn't exactly shatter world records, it did help me achieve my running goals, and I can officially call myself a marathoner!

After my experiences, I truly feel like a 10 week marathon program is the best way to go. Marathon training in 10 weeks allows you to maintain a sane lifestyle and still get you to the finish line. If I wouldn't have taken a chance on this program, I don't know if I would have ever accomplished my running goals.
