Guide To How A Real NFL Expert Picks Against The Spread And Wins

By Tonia Michael

If you are interested in learning more about gambling on the NFL this guide will help you out. As well as teaching the basics of how to pick football bets it will also look at how an NFL expert picks against the spread to make the really big money. Football is a game of inches. Here is how to break those measurements down a tad and weigh things in your favor.

When anybody picks a football team there are four main factors they need to take into account. First is the teams involved, second is the home and road records, third is the date and weather and fourth and final is the spread. In order to analyze why each of these is so important, let's break each down individually.

The first thing is the also the most obvious: the teams involved in a game. Without some basic knowledge of this you really shouldn't be making picks at all. Compare their seasonal win/ loss records and points scored for and against. Get an idea of how they measure up offence to defence.

After you have taken a look at those basics it is time to get a little deeper. You need to split the records into home and road categories and then analyze them separately. It's a stark fact but the vast majority of team in the NFL today have dreadful road records. Even some solid teams with definite, fair play-off ambitions just cannot pick up wins in other people's stadiums.

With tight games often determined by who is at home, you can see how important the location is going to be. Don't be afraid to bet against a favorite who is playing away. This might seem like a basic tip but it is amazing how many first time gamblers underestimate the power of stadium advantage.

Date and weather are also huge factors. Some sides fall apart when the wind blows, so it is always a good idea to find out who they are. The period of the season is very important too as it affects what both sides have to gain from a win at this point.

Say you have the odds on favorites for this season's Superbowl playing a side who have an outside chance of getting a wild card spot. During the first few weeks of the season it would appear to be a fairly easy pick. If, however, it's the third week in December and the favorites have already qualified for the play-offs, while the underdogs are still chasing, the result is far less forgone.

The spread is worth paying attention to as it offers up some good money on teams that might otherwise seem like bad pay-outs. An NFL expert picks against the spread by finding one of two things - either a high flying franchise who have trouble making the spread or a poor performing side who despite losing nearly every game, somehow manage to cover nearly every week. Betting based on this statistic makes the really smart money.
