The Best Smallmouth Bass Lures

By Elinor Tran

Smallmouth prefer to swim around structure such as piers or logs. They also like rocky bottoms. The best methods to catch these prized fish is to try the smallmouth bass lures in the areas they hang out. Fisherman can look at the shoreline to get an idea of what the bottom looks like. Clear water provides the opportunity to see the bottom structure in shallow sections.

When the water is a temperature of fifty five degrees, the fish are most active. They spawn in the shallower water during the Spring. In the summer they can be found more in deep water.

Spinning lures are a good lure to use. They come in a variety of colors. Use spinners that the fish can easily spot. A darker colored lure is best to use when the lake is clear. On the other hand, use light colored lures when the water is murky or cloudy.

A feathered fly tipped with a meal worm or maggot works extremely well. Tie one on the end of a line with a bobber and pop it around structure. This method works well for bass along with other species like panfish, crappies and perch. You can use a variety of colors for different fish.

Live bait such as crayfish, minnows or worms is another good lure. An effective method is to use a double hook setup with a crab or worm on the lower hook and the minnow on the top hook. The fish can have their choice of bait. It is often productive to move the bait around a bit.

A Mepps lure is a favorite all around lure. They are manufactured in different sizes but the number one or number two Mepps tend to be most productive. Casting or trolling with the Mepps in locations the fish hang out produce a lot of action.

Smallmouth are a favorite fish for most fisherman. They are exciting to watch as they fight trying to break free and will often leap out of the water. Learn how to use the best smallmouth bass lures and you will have many days of exciting fishing in your future.
