10 Facts You Probably Didn't Know About The London Olympics

The London Summer Olympic Games are almost here! The Olympic Games 2012 will start on July 27, 2012 and end on August 12, 2012. Here are some interesting and fun facts about the London Olympics - bet you didn't know at least some of them!

1. There are a large number of participants in the London Olympics - 10,500 athletes from 205 countries, to be precise. The Paralympics include another 4,200 athletes, orginating from 165 nations. 26 sports are included in the Olympics, and 19 are included in the 19 Paralympics.

2. The Olympic Stadium which hosts the opening ceremonies will have a capacity of 80,000 people. It is the lightest Olympic Stadium ever built. There are fourteen lighting towers which are needed because this the first Olympic Games with HD TV freeze-frame coverage, and the lighting towers will be essential to capture the action.

3. London will be swarming with media people attempting to cover the events. It is estimated that around 25,000 will come to London for the Olympics.

4. The largest location ever opened by McDonald's will be for the London Olympics. The restaurant is 30,000 square meter restaurant with a seating capacity of 1,500 people.

5. The Olympic Village will hold 2,800 athlete apartments. London's Olympic teams are aiming for 97 per cent of athletes to be living no more than 30 minutes away from their event venue.

6. The number of meals expected to be served at the Olympics is a mind-boggling 14 million! 25,000 loaves of bread, and 75,000 liters of milk are expected to be consumed.

7. The London 2012 Megastore, which is one of four London 2012 shops in the Olympic park, spans more than 4,000 square meters, and offers the most extensive range of the London 2012 licensed products under one roof.

8. The number of tickets available for the events totals to 9.6 million. 8 million of these are for the Olympics, and the remaining 1.6 million are for the Paralympics.

9. A special terminal has been built at Heathrow Airport for athletes heading home after the Games.

10. The Games are projected to generate 12,000 new jobs in the Olympic Park.
