5 Points on Bike Safety that You Should Inculcate on Kids

By Stephan Salvatore

Toddlers who ride bikes become physically fit. Indeed, the act of riding bicycles enables kids to be in good moods and keen. In spite of this, children get swept away by the enjoyment and lose their sense of safety that forestalls possible harm.

Individuals with children ought to train and remind their kids on the fundamental safeguards to maintain when riding bikes with colleagues. 5 key safety tips that you should inculcate on your toddlers are discussed below.

Tip 1 - Wear a Helmet when Riding a Bike

First and foremost, train your toddlers on the importance of wearing helmets when out riding bicycles. Bring them with you when scouting for helmets and ensure that you only acquire one that fits properly. A good helmet should be easy to adjust on the front to back and sides.

Once they begin riding bikes, teach them to fasten the chinstrap properly and also to keep the helmet at the desired level on the head. The helmet should ideally cover much of the brow. An unspoken canon should be to use helmet only not hats or caps which cannot secure the head in case of a fall or injury.

Tip 2 - Look both ways before Leaving the Driveway

Consequently, aptly tell your toddlers to be wary of other road users when they are ready to emerge onto riding lanes or turn into corners. It is desirable for them to steer away from busy tracks or roads and observe other road users who may emerge from either lanes. There is no doubt that most mishaps occur around corners, or as kids enter tracks with many users. Other than that, they should also move their bikes over busy junctions and not ride them.

Tip 3 - Keep Away from Dangerous Objects

Moreover, tell your kids to keep away from dangerous items on the roads which may harm them. There are several objects such as chipping, dents, depressions and wet grass on the road. Such objects may harm kids, and when they find them, they should brake and clear them off the tracks. These may be common in the wet season where there is flowing rainwater. Your kids should also avoid riding bikes when the road is wet, instead they should wait till water clears up.

Tip 4 - Dress Properly Every time You Ride

Your children should also know the right kind of clothes to wear when riding their bikes. As a rule of thumb, they must never wear clothes with loose underside around the legs or ankles. This increases the possibility of the pants being caught in the chain. If the pants are long, they should fold them up, or better still, tack them in their socks before riding out. Also, remind your children to tie their shoe straps because it might get entangled in the moving chain and trigger a bad fall.

The best choice of clothes for your kids should be bright colored clothing or any than can be easily seen on the road by oncoming traffic. A reflector might also help boost the bright colored clothing. Another important point to remind them is to wear light clothing in summer so that they don't get overheated. Regardless of their age, they should also wear gloves especially when riding on tarmac so that they can protect their hands in the event of a fall.

Tip 5 - Never Perform Tricks while Riding

To sum up, inform your toddlers of the need to be careful and never perform tricks on the riding lane. They are not supposed to try silly moves or trail each other as they ride, or outshine one another needlessly in a busy section of the road. When in the company of friends, they should ride on individual path at a judicious speed.

Discourage them from playing music when out riding their bikes. Music actually draws away their attention and this raises the likelihood that they will be involved in a mishap. Every kid should use an individual bike and not cart more than one person in a single bike.
